この事件は、イスラエル国籍のみを持つ人質に加え、人質のほぼ半数は外国人または複数の国籍を持っている事が判明している[13]。人質のうち兵士と民間人の正確な割合は不明である。捕虜はガザ地区の別の場所に拘束されている可能性がある[14]。
2024年2月14日の時点で、人質112人が生きたままイスラエルに帰還し、うち105人が捕虜交換協定で釈放され、4人がハマスによって一方的に解放され、人質3人がイスラエル国防軍によって救出された[15][16][17][18][19][20]。人質11人の遺体がイスラエルに送還され、うち人質のうち3人はイスラエル国防軍（IDF）の同士討ちで死亡[21]、人質8人の遺体はイスラエルに送還された[22][23]。イスラエル政府によると、ハマースによって人質33人が殺害されたと伝えられている[24][25][26][27][28]。イスラエル諜報機関の未確認情報によると、さらに少なくとも20人の人質が死亡し、遺体はガザ地区で拘束されている可能性がある[29]。2024年2月14日の時点で、ガザ地区では134人の人質が依然として拘束されており、130人の人質は2023年10月7日に拉致され、4人の人質はそれ以前に捕らえられている[30]。
ハマースは、イスラエルがパレスチナ人捕虜全員を釈放する代わりに、人質全員を釈放することを提案した[31]。2023年10月までに、イスラエルは5,200人のパレスチナ人（170人の少年を含む）を刑務所に拘留した。ハマスは、彼らの釈放を確保することが目的であると述べた[32]。いくつかの国がイスラエルとハマースの交渉に参加しており、カタールが主導権を握っている[33]。
2023年11月22日にイスラエル政府とハマスは、ハマスによる人質約50人の解放と引き換えに、パレスチナ捕虜150人の解放と4日間の停戦に合意した。この交換には女性と子供の人質が参加した[34][35][36]。停戦最終日である2023年11月30日の時点で、イスラエル人81人、タイ人23人、フィリピン人1人を含む105人の民間人人質が解放された[37]。2024年2月12日にゴールデンハンド作戦でアルゼンチン系イスラエル人の民間人2名が救出された。イスラエルの情報によると、2024年3月現在、ハマースは人質99名を生存させ、遺体35名を拘束しているとしている[24]。
