イギリス（イングランド）のアバディーン生まれ。ケンブリッジ大学卒業後、渡米。スタンフォード大学、アリゾナ大学、ヴァージニア大学教授などを歴任した。
専門分野[編集]
微分幾何学を中心とした幾何学を専門としている。この分野では、いくつかの数学に関する賞を受賞している。
