Katsuyama Machinami preservation area

Katsuyama Machinami preservation area is a preservation area of a historic street of stores and houses, which located in Katsuyama, Maniwa-shi, Okayama Prefecture. Okayama Prefecture designated it for the first time in the prefecture in 1985.

Overview[編集]

The area has been flourished as ‘a town under the fortress’ and the important spot for traffic such as Izumo Street. Many historical assets such as grid windows on the white wall, Warehouse with Namako walls, and the dock for Takase ship are still remaining.

The former Katsuyama-cho carried out a project to build a Machinami preservation area from 1986 (Showa 61) to 1990 (Showa 21). The old telegraph and telephone station of Nakamachi was renovated into a local Museum and the old Watanabe’s house of the Edo era was renovated into a Samurai’s House.

  • 1985 (Showa 60): Designated as the Machinami Preservation Area of Okayama Prefecture.
  • 1987 (Showa 62): The Local Museum and the samurai residence (formerly Watanabe Residence) were opened.
  • 1990 (Heisei 2): The repair work of Nakahashi was completed. Won the Okayama Furusato Culture Award
  • 1991 (Heisei 3): Won the Okayama Landscape Award.
  • 1995 (Heisei 7): A Movie, ‘Tora-san to the Rescue’ was shot.
  • 1996 (Heisei 8): A supporting group for the Machinami preservation project was established. Machizukuri of Norens was started from Yamamoto-cho.
  • 1997 (Heisei 9): The resting place for tourists, Kazantei was open.
  • 1999 (Heisei 11): The Katsuyama Ohina Festival started. 35 houses displayed Ohina dolls and approximately 5,000 people visited.
  • 2001 (Heisei 13): Katsuyama Machinami Priority Area Development Conference was held for the first time and held several times after
  • 2002 (Heisei 14): Approved as 100 national excursion spots. Katsuyama Ohina Festival executive committee won the Okayama Prefectural Culture Grand Prize. Recognized as ‘a Dream Street Renaissance’.
  • 2003 (2003): Awarded the Machitzukuri Prize of The Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications for Regional Development (Machitzukuri Division).  He won the 36th Miki Memorial Award.
  • 2004 (Heisei 16): Awarded the 11th award for making the best tourist spots
  • 2005(Heisei 17): Katsuyama Culture Museum Hishio is open.
  • 2008 (Heisei 20): Won the Grand Prix on Urban Landscape (awarded by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism)
  • 2017 (Heisei 29): ‘Wikipedia Town’ was held at the Katsuyama Cultural Center and a new article was created about Katsuyama Machinami Preservation Area.
